Bending Pencil

Try bending a pencil by placing it in a glass of water.

Materials:
1. A clear glass
2. Water
3. Pencil or drinking straw

Instruction:
1. Fill glass with water
2. Put the pencil or straw in the water.
3. Look at it from the top, sides and bottom of the glass.
4. What happen when you look through the sides of the glass?

Explanation:
Light travel slower through water than air. As the light enters the glass of water, and as it leaves the glass, it changes speed and direction, making the pencil look bent. This phenomena is called refraction.
